Historic Austin Wedding Venue | Allan House
Here at our historic Austin wedding venue, we’ve ooh-ed and ahh-ed over countless engagement rings. Every sparkly design is unique, and is an integral part of each couple’s love story. We’ve never met a ring we didn’t like! However, this wedding season, there’s an engagement ring trend that has truly captivated us: colorful gemstones. We just can’t get enough of them!
Bringing classic style into the modern era, colorful gemstones are a beautiful nod to vintage taste. This trend gaining popularity among our couples—and couples everywhere. Modern-day engagement rings tend to be unique expressions of a couple’s aesthetic; colorful gems are one way to add personalized flair to your ring finger. However, colored stones also have undeniable historic ties—making them the perfect choice for the bride who balances classic taste with personal style.
We have a special appreciation for this wedding trend, given our historic Austin wedding venue and its Victorian history. The Victorian era was a transformative time for engagement ring styles. In the early Victorian days, large colorful gems (much like the stones becoming popular again today) reigned supreme, typically accompanied by decorative motifs like intertwined hearts and even snakes (a popular symbol of eternity)!
In the Late Victorian period, engagement gems made the shift toward the popular diamond rings we often think of today. Thanks to the discovery of large diamond deposits in South Africa, diamonds become more commonly available and were ultimately marketed by De Beers as the quintessential engagement ring gem.
Colorful settings made a comeback in the 1920s–1930s, featuring geometric designs representative of the Art Deco era. Emeralds and rubies were often paired with diamonds, resulting in luxurious combinations befitting of the Gatsby-era. Colored gemstones were again popularized in the 1980s, thanks to Princess Di’s iconic sapphire gem. And of course, Kate Middleton’s hand is now adorned with the same royal jewel, inspiring a renewed interest in sapphire stones.
We’ll always love a classic diamond, but we’re excited to see some new hues in the mix this year! We don’t expect to see many snake motifs this year – we’ll leave that trend with Queen Victoria – but there’s no doubt that colorful engagement rings are on the rise.
Is a colorful design right for you? We can’t wait to see it! Bring your stunning sparkler to our historic Austin wedding venue so we can admire your unique engagement ring. Schedule a tour today to learn more about our Victorian-era venue and how we can personalize the space to suit your needs.
