While the beauty of a timeless home is the main attraction at a historic wedding venue, taking advantage of the outdoors can add an entirely new level of elegance to any wedding or event. Allan House adores seeing brides and their coordinators make use of the outdoor portion of our historic wedding venue, bringing together indoor sophistication and nature’s elegance. Over the years, we’ve gained a few insights and seen some unique additions to our outdoor areas that make for memorable occasions and beautiful photography. Take a look at some of our favorites from weddings at Allan House!
Lighting: Lighting is a must, indoors or out. The illumination you choose for your ceremony and reception set the tone for the event, and add a layer of magic to the entire event. Twinkling strings of lights are an easy and effective way to accomplish this ephemeral look, but don’t stop there! Sometimes our brides forget that you can take wow-factor lighting outdoors… gorgeous chandeliers and elegant paper lanterns look just as incredible outdoors as they do inside (sometimes even better!).
Furniture: This is another category our brides sometimes forget… but it really adds a welcoming, chic component to an outdoor scene. A chaise lounge in the garden or historic chairs at the ceremony lend a completely unique look to your big day. Vintage rentals complement your historic venue choice, and they make a lovely pop-up outdoor seating area for your guests to enjoy. As an added bonus, decorative furniture adds seating capacity to your reception, and makes for a fun photo opportunity (for you and your guests). Feel free to get creative! Mix and match one-of-a-kind pieces to create a look unique to you.
Rugs: Go ahead, lay down a rug through the middle of a patio or in the center of your outdoor tent. Exquisite carpets don’t just belong over hardwood… they add an elegant and cozy touch to your outdoor ceremony as well! From long runners down your outdoor aisle, to intricate rugs under the vintage furniture you selected, layering textures like this can add depth to your event design.
Tents: Tents are a convenient way to bring the indoors outside when needed. Create intimate little seating areas or dining stations with smaller tents, or make use of our full-sized tent for a cozy feel during colder months. Tents can be fully heated, and can even include all the other elements we’ve mentioned so far. Don’t let a wintry season deter you from making use of the outdoors. Tents can be the perfect way to bridge the gap between the comfort of the indoors and the natural beauty of the outdoors. It’s your big day—you should have both!
We know part of selecting a historic venue is the interior’s charm of a bygone era. But we think the best historic venues are the ones that tie together indoors and outdoors seamlessly, integrating elegant charm inside and out. A few simple touches will enhance the natural beauty of an outdoor venue, making your guests feel at home and simultaneously giving them an experience they’ll never forget.
